Floating Dreams: The Magic of Dal-Uy
The Greyhound community gathered in Dumaguete City’s Rizal Boulevard on September 11, 2026, with their lanterns for the highly anticipated Dal-Uy Festival. Known affectionately to all as the “Festival of Hope”, Dal-Uy is a yearly tradition that transforms the Dumaguete coastline into a glowing sea of aspirations every year.

The name Dal-uy breathes life into the Filipino word daloy, which means “to flow.” The university adapted this exquisite tradition from the Obon Festival, a late-summer ritual in Japan where families place glowing lanterns onto rivers and seas to gently guide the spirits of their ancestors back to the afterlife.
In its earliest days at Foundation University, Dal-uy started out as a small, solemn gathering of administrators. They placed floating lanterns into the still waters of the Social Garden Pond on the main campus. The ritual soon opened its arms to the entire campus, inviting every student, faculty member, staff, and alumni to write their innermost prayers and dreams onto paper lanterns before sending them out into the ocean.
As darkness envelops Dumaguete’s Rizal Boulevard, thousands of lanterns drift from the shoreline, illuminating the water with the collective aspirations of the Greyhound community. Each floating light represents a deeply personal intention. The sight of these lanterns converging on the horizon underscores a core institutional value: while our individual paths differ, our shared hopes connect us all.
Environmental sustainability remains a core pillar of the Dal-uy Festival, balancing celebration with ecological stewardship. The event is conducted in accordance with the ecological protection ordinances of Dumaguete City.
The university demonstrates this commitment by constructing all lanterns and floating platforms exclusively from biodegradable, eco-friendly materials. Organizers purposefully design these components for efficient retrieval and post-festival restoration, ensuring their reuse in future celebrations while preserving the local marine ecosystem.
Out on the water, local fishermen in motorized boats watch over the perimeter, using specialized nets and buoys to gently catch and retrieve every single lantern from the sea.
