Living a Dream

A proud alumnus of Foundation Preparatory Academy (FPA) and now a professional footballer for Loyola Football Club Victorias, Christian Nicoli Peñalosa, looks back on his time at FPA as the anchor of both his academic and athletic achievements. HIs journey from the classroom to the professional football field has been an impressive journey—shaped by discipline, sacrifice, and an unwavering love for the game.

Christian played for the FPA Football Team from elementary through senior high school. Among his best memories was winning the Palarong Panglungsod multiple times, which granted his team the chance to represent Dumaguete City at the regional level. One standout moment  was during the championship game at the Palarong Panglungsod, where he took the decisive penalty kick. “All I could think about at that point was the sacrifice and the months of hard preparation that led us there,” he recalls. Scoring that goal remains one of the highlights of his high school playing career.

Another memorable highlight was winning the prestigious Thirsty Cup in Cebu, where they competed against some of the most talented players and coaches in the Visayas. “When we represent the school in different places, I get to spend more time with my teammates and share experiences with each other,” he says.

Despite these achievements, being a student athlete was far from easy. He and his teammates often had to miss classes and exams when travelling for competitions. “Being able to manage your time is one of the many aspects of being an athlete that can benefit your academic performance,” he explains. It is difficult to balance being a student and an athlete. Given the way you manage to balance that, I believe you already know how to set priorities and meet deadlines.”  Aside from time management, discipline was also a key factor in helping him reach his goals.

A major influence throughout his journey has been Alexandro Elnar, his mentor and role model. “Even though he was already in Manila by the time I started high school, he never forgot to message me and continued to guide me,” Christian says. “When I got to college, he helped me accomplish my goals and constantly encouraged me to finish my studies and pursue my dreams.”

Alex’s support was crucial when Christian tried out for his dream school—De La Salle University (DLSU). Out of more than 100 athletes from across the Philippines, only six were awarded scholarships. After three days of tryouts, Christian was selected, which was a dream come true.

At DLSU, Christian rose not only as a player, but also as a leader, becoming a team captain in his final playing year.  He credits FPA for helping him develop the leadership skills that allowed him to inspire his teammates throughout his journey.

Now playing professionally, Christian is now living a dream many young athletes share. But, even as he lives that dream, he is already thinking about life beyond football. “Since there is a large network of professionals, sponsors, and other people in the athletic industry, I intend to pursue a career in business,” he shares.

Christian also hopes to pass on wisdom to aspiring student athletes. “You should prioritize your academics alongside your sports. Being able to complete a degree is a significant achievement for an athlete, and you should learn how to balance both.”

From a boy with big dreams to a man inspiring others to chase theirs, Christian Nicoli Peñalosa remains a true embodiment of what it means to carry the FPA spirit wherever life leads.
