Dennis Villahermosa, a proud graduate of Foundation University, completed his Bachelor of Science in Commerce major in Computer Application in October 2004 and marched with the Class of 2005. A standout student-athlete and team captain of the FU Greyhounds Basketball Team from 2002 to 2005, Dennis balanced academics with his commitment to basketball. This experience shaped his character and prepared him for life beyond college.
Studying at Foundation University was a great time for him as he was able to go to school in a new environment and play basketball at the same time. “Balancing school and sports taught me discipline, time management, and resilience, teaching me valuable skills,” he shared. Being part of the varsity team also provided financial support. Dennis and his teammates were awarded scholarships, but they were required to maintain good academic standing to remain on the team.
Dennis recalled the daily routine of a student-athlete, waking up early for 7 a.m. classes and attending evening practices that ran from six to nine. “The challenge was succeeding both in school and on the basketball court, testing me both mentally and physically.”
Serving as team captain of the Greyhounds for three years was an honor Dennis will never forget. He embraced the responsibility of leadership and always placed the team's success above individual success. “To be a good leader, you have to be a good example. I learned how to communicate, to be responsible, and to stay motivated.”
One of the most influential people during his time at the university was Coach Artemio "Adoy" Cortes, whom Dennis considers a second father. “Coach Adoy taught me work ethic, discipline and patience through his rigorous training.”
A memorable moment of his time at Foundation University was being recognized by University President Victor Vicente “Dean” Sinco for his high academic performance as an athlete. “That recognition meant a lot. Imagine all your hard work and perseverance was being recognized by D5 (referring to President Sinco).”
Today, Dennis continues to live by the values he gained from his time at FU. He has been with SPi Global, now known as Straive, for nearly 20 years and currently works as a production editor for journals. He believes FU helped train him to be patient, understanding, and to work under pressure.
To current students who are trying to balance academics and athletics, Dennis offers advice. “Persevere through the challenges and take it one day at a time and face them head-on.”
To his fellow alumni and the entire FU community, Dennis expresses his gratitude for the experience. “Being a Greyhound has a lasting impact on my career and I am thankful for the experience and this opportunity to reconnect with our alma mater.”
